Benefits of Epoxy Flooring

Polyaspartic Coatings

First what is polyaspartic? Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea that can be applied to concrete, and or metal surfaces.

  • Polyaspartics are almost three times stronger and more durable than epoxies.
  • Polyaspartics are more flexible and less likely to crack or peel.Polyaspartics are resistant to scratches and won't yellow from sunlight.
  • Polyaspartics cure quicker for a shorter time.
  • Polyaspartics provide increased durability while offering greater flexibility than epoxy, along with excellent heat, cold, salt and chemical resistance.
  • Polyaspartic coatings have a higher strength with a thinner application, and won't chip or delaminate as readily as epoxy.
  • Polyaspartic coatings have faster coating service and quicker drying time, and can be applied in all kinds of temperatures that range from -30deg Fahrenheit to 140deg Fahrenheit.

There are a couple downsides to polyaspartic coatings: you can't mix colors like you can with epoxy and achieve the same effects or results, and it's slightly more expensive, and working time is about half that of epoxy coatings. They also don't hold up well to acids.

What is epoxy, and what are its benefits and downsides

Epoxy is a thermosetting polymer that is created by combining a hardener and a resin. When the two are mixed a chemical reaction occurs that cross-links the polymer chains, making the resin hard and durable.

Here are some of the benefits:

  • Impact-, stain-, and crack-resistant surface
  • Moisture-resistant to prevent mold buildup
  • It creates a shiny high-gloss surface that can increase the brightness of interior areas
  • Fire-resistant and prevents potentially hazardous chemicals from seeping into the concrete
  • It is easy to install, clean, and maintain
  • You can create many different looks including a unique marble look for your kitchen floor, countertops, and anywhere else you decide appropriate.
  • There's an infinite color pallet to choose from, including lots of glitter options! You can create a unique look no one else will have!

Our Process

Our Flooring Finishing Services

To ensure a proper bond your surface must be properly prepped to attain an excellent adhesion. We start by grinding the surface using our industrial floor grinder with diamond embedded bits. This step removes a thin layer of concrete containing any oils, dirt or any other bond breakers from the surface. Bond breakers are anything that will keep our epoxy and polyaspartic coatings from adhering to the surface.

Surface Preparations

With the surface ground, any cracks need to be addressed to reach that new smooth floor. ALL visible cracks will be filled and sanded back and refilled if necessary.

Crack Vanishing

All that sanding and grinding has created dust. Our industrial floor grinder has a builtin HEPA vacuum that does a great job sucking up the majority of dust while grinding and sanding. However; several additional passes will need to be made over the entire floor using the same vacuum with a special attachment to remove any remaining particles.( Nothing too fancy, it's just a plastic nozzle.😄) Then to be followed up with a thorough acetone wipe down, removing any remaining oils that could still be embedded in the concrete.( And you thought this was simple. 😆)

Dust-Free Perfection

Now, the coating may commensurate! Armed with our trusty measuring buckets, and our spiked shoes calculations are made to determine the perfect amount of coating to use. Yes, in this case too much is not always a good thing. Our high quality resin products will be squeegeed and,or rolled onto the surface, depending on the application with back rolling every application to ensure a nice consistent finish. Once the area is totally coated and back rolled, flake will be thrown. Loaded with handfuls of flake it is tossed up like confetti until 100% rejection is achieved. That is just a fancy way of saying the resin is completely saturated.

Precision Coating

At this point we need a break, and the surface needs a few hours to cure.

Curing the Surface

Now that the resin has had time to cure we now will scrape all the excess flake from the floor, and vacuum up the loose flake.

Flake Cleanup

The final finish coat, it is almost complete! A similar process of applying the base coat is used for the final stunning clear coat application. We like to use the high quality Rock Hard Polyaspartic for our finish coat due to its unmatched durability!
